ABOUT MARTIJN HUISMAN

Researcher | Historian | Author

Martijn Huisman (Rotterdam, 1986) is a researcher, author, and reggae historian with a naturally inquisitive mindset and international outlook. Unearthing new insights and sharing knowledge are the driving forces behind my curiosity and dedication as a researcher.

Specialized in the fields of History, Health, Media & Communication. In 2021, I obtained a PhD in Communication Sciences at the Department of Communication Sciences within the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at Ghent University (Belgium). Previously, I worked 5+ years for international market research agency InSites Consulting as a qualitative researcher and senior research manager. As of March 2021, I am back in market research at SKIM, headquartered in Rotterdam,in the position of Director.

I graduated from the Erasmus University Rotterdam (The Netherlands), after having completed studies in History (BA) and Media and Communication (MA). I spent six months at Keio University in Tokyo (Japan) as an exchange student, and was a guest student with a focus on Japanese history and cinema at Leiden University (The Netherlands).

Grounded in academic practices, my research and writings blend personal fields of interest with professional skills and expertise. Topics I write about include media & communication, health communication, Japanese history and cinema, and, most notably, reggae music.
